Detailed explanation of OpenSSL self signed certificate

Basic concepts of digital certificate

Standards for digital certificates

  • 10. 509 version number: indicates which version of X.509 standard is used in the certificate. The version number will affect some specific information in the certificate
  • Serial number: a unique digital number assigned to each certificate by the CA. when the certificate is cancelled, the certificate serial number is actually placed in the CRL (Certificate Revocation List, Certificate Revocation List, or certificate blacklist) issued by the CA. this is also the reason for the unique serial number
  • Signature algorithm identifier: used to specify the signature algorithm used by CA when signing certificates. Common algorithms include RSA
  • Issuer information: X.500 name information of the entity issuing the certificate. It is usually a CA
  • Validity period of the certificate: the start date and time of the certificate and the end date and time; Indicates that the certificate is valid for both times.
  • Subject information: the unique identity of the certificate holder, which should be unique on the Internet
  • Publisher's digital signature: This is a signature generated using the publisher's private key to ensure that the certificate has not been modified after issuance.
  • Public key of the certificate: including the public key of the certificate, the identifier of the algorithm (indicating which cryptosystem the key belongs to) and other relevant key parameters

Common formats for digital certificates

  • CSR: certificate request file, which is not a certificate, but an application file for obtaining a signature certificate from a certification authority
  • CER: the certificate file can be binary code or BASE64 code
  • CRT: the certificate can be DER code or PEM code, which is common in linux system
  • pem: the encoding format is defined in RFC1421, but it is also widely used in key management. In essence, it is the binary content encoded by Base64
  • DER: certificate used for binary DER encoding. These certificates can also use CER or CRT as extensions
  • JKS: Java key storage file in binary format. It is a Java specific key file format. JKS keystore and private key can be protected with different passwords
  • p12/PFX: contains all private keys, public keys, and certificates. It is stored in binary format, also known as PFX file. It can be directly imported into the key area in windows. The keystore and private key are protected with the same password

Relationship between digital certificate and public key

A digital certificate is a public key certified by an authority (CA). By viewing the digital certificate, you can know which authority issued the certificate, the information of the certificate user and the user's public key. It has the following characteristics:

1. Digital certificates issued by specialized agencies are safe and effective.

2. There is a fee for issuing digital certificates.

3. Will not be impersonated, safe and reliable.

4. The digital certificate has a service life. After the service life, the certificate becomes unavailable. CA can also void certificates during the probation period.

openssl self signed SSL process

Initialize the certificate storage directory structure and files

$ mkdir certs crl csr newcerts private
$ echo 1000 > crlnumber && echo 1000 > serial && touch index.txt

Notes:

  • Private: stores the private key of the CA certificate
  • certs: store CA certificate
  • netcerts: store the newly generated server or client certificate, which is generally named by serial number
  • Serial: serial number. The initial value needs to be given. It can be set to 011000 at will
  • index.txt: file database, which will be updated after the certificate is issued

Create CA root certificate

# Generate CA root certificate private key: to ensure security, generate a 4096 bit private key and encrypt it in CNs mode
$ openssl genrsa -CNs256 -out private/rootca.key 4096
Generating RSA private key, 4096 bit long modulus
....................................................................................................................................................++
........................................................................++
e is 65537 (0x10001)
Enter pass phrase for private/rootca.key: (input CA Private key protection (password)
Verifying - Enter pass phrase for private/rootca.key: (Input confirmation CA Private key protection (password)

# Generate a self signed CA root certificate
$ openssl req -config openssl.cnf -new -x509 -days 3650 -sha256 -extensions v3_ca -key private/rootca.key -out certs/rootca.cer -subj "/C=CN/L=F/O=kubesre/OU=ACS/CN=*.kubesre.com"
Enter pass phrase for private/rootca.key: (input CA a challenge password )

# Review the certificate contents to ensure that the certificate is generated correctly

$ openssl x509 -noout -text -in certs/rootca.cer

Make proxy CA certificate (intermediate CA)

It is not necessary to create a proxy CA certificate. The reason for this step is:

  1. The security of the root certificate must be fully guaranteed

 2. In the implementation of business logic, the existence of agent CA is also quite common

If the proxy CA is used to issue the client certificate, special attention should be paid to the server configuration. Take nignx as an example: SSL must be set_ verify_ depth 2; That is, the authentication depth of the client certificate chain. The default value is 1; Because there is a root CA above the proxy Ca, it should be set to 2 here, otherwise it cannot pass the verification

# When generating the private key of proxy CA certificate: it is also applicable to 4096 bits and is not encrypted
$ openssl genrsa -out private/intermediateca.key 4096
# Issue request generated at
$ openssl req -new -key private/intermediateca.key -out csr/intermediateca.csr -subj "/C=CN/L=shanghai/O=kubesre/OU=ACS/CN=Pty Intermediateca CA"
# Issue the proxy CA certificate request with the CA root certificate
$ openssl x509 -req -extfile openssl.cnf -extensions v3_ca -days 3600 -sha256 -CA certs/rootca.cer -CAkey private/rootca.key -CAcreateserial -CAserial serial -in csr/intermediateca.csr -out certs/intermediateca.cer
Signature ok
subject=/C=CN/L=shanghai/O=kubesre/OU=ACS/CN=Pty Intermediateca CA
Getting CA Private Key
Enter pass phrase for private/rootca.key: (input CA a challenge password )

# View the contents of the proxy CA certificate to ensure that the certificate is generated correctly
$ openssl x509 -noout -text -in certs/intermediateca.cer

        <h1>Welcome to CentOS</h1>

        <h2>The Community ENTerprise Operating System</h2>

        <p><a href="http://www.centos.org/">CentOS</a> is an Enterprise-class Linux Distribution derived from sources freely provided
to the public by Red Hat, Inc. for Red Hat Enterprise Linux. CentOS conforms fully with the upstream vendors
redistribution policy and aims to be functionally compatible. (CentOS mainly changes packages to remove upstream vendor
branding and artwork.)</p>

        <p>CentOS is developed by a small but growing team of core
developers.&nbsp; In turn the core developers are supported by an active user community
including system administrators, network administrators, enterprise users, managers, core Linux contributors and Linux enthusiasts from around the world.</p>

        <p>CentOS has numerous advantages including: an active and growing user community, quickly rebuilt, tested, and QA'ed errata packages, an extensive <a href="http://www.centos.org/download/mirrors/">mirror network</a>, developers who are contactable and responsive, Special Interest Groups (<a href="http://wiki.centos.org/SpecialInterestGroup/">SIGs</a>) to add functionality to the core CentOS distribution, and multiple community support avenues including a <a href="http://wiki.centos.org/">wiki</a>, <a
